Join Admission & Matriculation Board

JAMB Use of English is compulsory for every Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidate. It evaluates the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English and to use English as a foundation for learning at tertiary level.

The syllabus is organised into three principal sections:

  1. Comprehension and Summary

  2. Lexis and Structure

  3. Oral Forms

The examination also includes questions based on the prescribed reading text. For the 2026 UTME, the widely published prescribed text is The Lekki Headmaster by Kabir Alabi Garba.

The commonly published examination structure contains 60 questions: comprehension, cloze and prescribed-text questions; sentence interpretation, synonyms, antonyms and sentence completion; and oral-form questions.
